Kevin is an enigma when it comes to the skate world. He's a rare breed - consistently progressing while aging ever so gracefully. Kevin and his twin, Kenny are of Trini descent and were born in Jacksonville, Florida. After relocating to the North East (DMV), Kevin started skating in 2000, so he's seen and been a part of the old and new Pulaski scene. We caught up with him to hear about the past, present and what the future might hold.
Sloppydays: So, first things first, I've watched you continue to progress year after year even after a five year hiatus from skating. How old are you now, and what keeps you motivated to continue putting out all this content?
Kevin Augustine: I just turned 33, and honestly, what keeps me going now is just the love for the craft/sport - whatever you want to call it. It's just a feeling I can't explain. I also want to have stuff for my son to look back at when he's older, and even though I'm getting older, I’m still trying to keep up in the game.
SD: Happy belated birthday. It's great you went from having a twin brother to skate with to having your son, Cairo to skate with all the time. With Coronavirus and the stay at home orders, how are you guys filling the schedule up?
KA: Haha yeah, this Corona shit is crazy man, I still try to get Kenny to skate to this day. It was really sick when we were younger having someone to skate with. It helped he was goofy-footed, so we could trade shoes when one side would wear out. As far as my son, it's so much fun skating with him. It's a blessing. This COVID thing is crazy because I'm a carpenter, and my job is considered "essential," so I'm supposed to be at work, but I took off a couple of weeks. Fortunately, it is PTO and the stay at home thing’s cool and all, but I still go out, just not every day. I try to skate for an hour or two and then head back home. It's crazy though no cops kicking you out of anywhere now so every spot is wide open.
SD: I can't imagine a calm two hours in the Washington DC, let alone the Fort - Pulaski (Freedom Plaza), not checking for park police. Speaking of, I died laughing at the clip from that new Debrief part where you shoot your board into the stranger riding the lime scooter. What's the wildest shit you've seen up there?
KA: Yeah, the dude was in the way, haha. I’ve seen a lot of wild stuff there in the past 15 years+. Lots of fights, everything, but one I won’t forget is probably a couple of summers ago when a guy was getting chased on a dirt bike down Pennsylvania Ave in the middle of the day by like 20 police cars in a high-speed chase heading towards the White House. Shit was crazy, I hope he got away, but I've been filming a lot - got some clips in the cut now, which is good cause I'm working on a little DGK Pulaski edit & Bureau video.
SD: Looking forward to all the new content and more clips of you and Cairo! What would you tell your younger self if you could go back in time?
KA: Haha, I would tell my younger self to focus more, but it’s all good.
SD: Solid, appreciate you taking time out your day to do this, any final words or shout outs?
KA: Thanks for everyone that supports me and what I do - I really appreciate everything. Hard work does pay off. That goes with anything in life. Shout out all the homies, all the filmers, my sponsors, and photographers that point their camera at me, shout out my son Cairo 🙏🏾.
